Exploring Self-Image Through Photography: A Student-Led Research Project

As part of an innovative self-image photography project, our talented Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta interns Jaelyn and Makhila explored how young people perceive themselves through the lens of photography. The project aimed to foster self-awareness, confidence, and meaningful conversations about body image and self-esteem.

Interns conducted thoughtful portrait sessions with their peers, prioritizing comfort and consent throughout the process. Each participant was invited to reflect on their experience during a post-session self-image survey, designed to capture emotional responses to their photographs.

The interns then analyzed the survey results and compiled their insights into a detailed self-image research report. Their findings offer valuable perspectives on how young people relate to their own images—and how supportive spaces like Girls Inc. can encourage positive self-perception.
