Once Upon a Summer at KIPP Vision: A Community Where Every Scholar Belonged
Summer 2026 marked a new chapter at KIPP Vision—not only for the scholars, but also for a first-time site leadership team. What began with the natural questions and learning curves of a new program soon became a close-knit community grounded in relationships, encouragement, and shared growth.
From the beginning, the team made it a priority to know scholars and families by name. Daily conversations, consistent communication, and a welcoming atmosphere helped families feel seen and connected to the program.
A Site That Became a Family
Each staff member brought something unique to the experience. Some created space for young people who needed someone to listen. Others designed learning activities so engaging that scholars wanted to continue working even when it was time for a break.
As the weeks progressed, relationships among staff, scholars, and families grew stronger. The program became more than a place to spend the summer; it became a community where young people could be challenged, supported, and encouraged to take greater responsibility for themselves and one another.
The experience also strengthened the site team’s leadership. Staff learned to stay present, anticipate needs, communicate clearly, and respond thoughtfully as each day unfolded. Their flexibility helped create a calmer, more connected environment where scholars could focus on learning, building friendships, and growing in confidence.
Youth of the Summer: Chase Harden
Chase Harden’s summer journey demonstrated the difference meaningful relationships can make. Staff connected with him through conversations, basketball, football, and his goals for the future. As trust grew, so did Chase’s confidence and willingness to contribute.
He began taking greater initiative, helping with cleanup, encouraging other scholars, and stepping forward as a leader. His positive energy became contagious, and the leadership qualities he already possessed became increasingly visible to the people around him.
Chase’s story reminded staff that when a young person feels seen, heard, and supported, he has more room to recognize—and act on—the leader he is capable of becoming.
A summer program may end after a few weeks, but the confidence, relationships, and hope built during that time can continue growing long afterward.
Dreaming Beyond Today
During the final week, middle school scholars gathered to talk about their aspirations and the lives they hoped to build. The conversation encouraged them to think beyond the present and become more intentional about their goals.
As the program closed, KIPP Vision scholars left with more than memories. They left with stronger relationships, a greater sense of purpose, and the belief that their futures are worth dreaming about.
