Older scholars became reading role models for their younger peers.
An August reading activity at KIPP Vision gave older
scholars a chance to put leadership into practice
while supporting their younger peers.
Small gestures. Meaningful encouragement.
Sitting alongside scholars in kindergarten through
second grade, the older students helped sound out words,
encouraged their reading partners to follow along,
and celebrated their efforts. Their patience made room
for younger scholars to participate and keep trying.

The activity also gave older scholars an opportunity
to model kindness and responsibility. By offering
encouragement and paying attention to what their reading
partners needed, they showed how leadership can take
shape in everyday interactions.
For the younger scholars, reading with an older student
brought excitement to the experience. It was a chance
to practice with someone who was ready to listen
and cheer them on.
