Bright Bites: Exploring the Science of Smiles at STEAM Club

Bright Bites: Exploring the Science of Smiles at STEAM Club

On Saturday, April 18th, the Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta STEAM Club transformed into a laboratory for oral health. In an exciting partnership with LINKS Atlanta, our girls participated in “Bright Bites: Eat Healthy, Smile Bright,” a program that proves science and wellness go hand-in-hand.

The Science of Decay: A Hands-On Experiment

How exactly do sugary drinks impact your teeth? Our “young scientists” found out by using eggs to simulate tooth enamel. By observing how eggs react to popular candies and sodas, the girls witnessed the chemical process of decay in real-time. This interactive experiment turned a standard health lesson into a memorable scientific discovery.

Meeting the Experts: Careers in Dentistry

We were honored to host a professional panel featuring experts from Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA) and the Georgia School of Orthodontics. STEAM Club members engaged with:

  • Pediatric Dentists

  • Orthodontists

  • Dental Hygienists

These leaders didn’t just share health tips; they shared their professional journeys. By connecting classroom experiments to the work done at leading medical institutions, we are helping our girls envision themselves in high-impact medical and dental careers.

Lifelong Habits, Bright Futures

The goal of “Bright Bites” is to inspire healthy habits that last a lifetime. When a girl understands the science behind her nutrition, she is more likely to make informed choices that protect her health.
