Civic Leadership in Action: Town Halls and Public Service at Girls Inc.

This March, Girls Inc. of Greater Atlanta celebrated Women’s History Month by moving beyond the history books and into the rooms where decisions are made. Our youth participants spent the month engaging with local leaders and witnessing the democratic process firsthand.

Mentorship in the Courtroom: Meeting Tahnicia Phillips

We were honored to welcome Cobb County State Clerk Ms. Tahnicia Phillips to our center. Ms. Phillips provided a rare look into the Georgia court system and her journey into public service. By sharing her personal experiences, she offered a real-life roadmap for leadership and dedication. For our girls, seeing a successful leader from their own community reinforces a vital message: public service is a path open to them.

A Front Row Seat to Democracy: The Town Hall Field Trip

The highlight of the month was a field trip to a local Town Hall meeting regarding the development of a new professional women’s soccer stadium in Atlanta. Our girls observed the entire legislative lifecycle:

  1. The Proposal: Watching leaders present plans for community-accessible sports fields.

  2. The Discussion: Hearing how community concerns and benefits are weighed.

  3. The Vote: Witnessing the actual voting process that determines a project’s future.

By demystifying how city decisions are made, we are teaching our girls that advocacy isn’t just a concept—it’s a tool they can use.

Building Future Changemakers

Through these real-world experiences, Girls Inc. is simplifying civic engagement. We are ensuring our girls know that their voices, ideas, and presence at the table matter. Whether it’s in a courtroom or at a Town Hall, these girls are preparing to be the leaders who cast the next generation of votes.
