The beginning of a new program year at Girls Inc.
of Greater Atlanta.
The first month of Girls Inc. afterschool programming
focused on helping scholars find their place in a new
community. Alongside learning names and routines,
participants explored the organization’s history,
its mission, and what it means to be
strong, smart, and bold in everyday life.
Our story
Starting with the Girls Inc. story
Learning how Girls Inc. began opened conversations about
why the organization exists and how its mission connects
to scholars’ own experiences. Participants considered
what leadership looks like at school, how they can
support one another, and what it means to use their voices.
These discussions gave scholars opportunities to ask
questions, share ideas, and recognize ways they can
contribute to their communities.
Our voices
Practicing self-advocacy
Through the GIGA Bill of Rights,
participants explored the importance of understanding
and communicating their rights. Conversations focused
on speaking up with confidence, respect, and purpose—skills
they can practice in friendships, at school, and at home.
Character development was another part of the month’s
work. Scholars explored confidence, critical thinking,
emotional awareness, kindness, and respect, connecting
those qualities to how they interact with others.
Our community
Building a community together
August also made space for the everyday work of building
relationships: listening, asking questions, learning
expectations, and getting to know one another. Those
experiences helped establish a foundation for participation
and belonging as the program year began.

We will continue building on that foundation throughout
the year, giving scholars opportunities to practice
self-advocacy, contribute their ideas, and support their peers.
